What is a reverse osmosis system?

Reverse osmosis is a method of water filtration that removes impurities from drinking water by using a semi-permeable membrane (synthetic liner) to trap big impurities and contaminants including chlorine, salt, and grime. Clean drinking water is produced when air moves from the more concentrated side of the RO membrane, which has more impurities, to the less concentrated side, which has fewer contaminants. The permeate is the name for the produced final form of fresh water that is drinkable. Waste or brine is the term for the leftover concentrated water. Reverse osmosis can eliminate germs, that are extremely harmful to human consumption. In addition to pollutants and silt. It completely purifies water down to the molecular and microscopic level, leaving only pure H2O.

 

how do reverse osmosis systems work? 

Reverse osmosis works when pressure pushes water through a semipermeable membrane, it then eliminates pollutants from unfiltered water, or feed water. To produce clean drinking water, water flows from the more concentrated side of the RO membrane—which has more impurities—to the less concentrated side—which has fewer contaminants.

THE PROBLEM

Shortage of purified water, so well water had to be bought in tankers, and therefore increased costs in the production process. The client was looking for a way to reduce costs by optimizing their processes. The cost of water and its transfer to the plant represents a high impact in production cost.

Ultrafiltration

The solution

ARKQUA® Customer acquired two ARKQUA systems, each capable to produce 132,000 GPD (500m3d) of purified water. Each system is mounted inside a 40' container, fully automatic. Integral Clean/flush system automatically flush piping and membranes with fresh water at shutdown. This subsystem is also utilized for periodic chemical cleaning of the membranes.

THE RESULT

Reduction of production costs by 50%, in addition the extra load driven by having to receive water distribution trucks loaded with water daily. Production time was significantly optimized, and water quality used for the development of nauplii and larvae was considerably improved. Having remote monitoring of the plant is a great benefit that allows to take proactive actions and minimized the risk of failure.
