What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Across the country and around the world, “Reverse Osmosis” (also known as RO) is becoming increasingly popular. However, many are still unsure what the term actually means. Reverse osmosis is a process used to purify water. It leverages pressure and a semi-permeable membrane to force water minerals and other contaminating particles through a semipermeable membrane, during this process contaminants are filtered out, leaving clean and purified water.

Of course, to make it simpler, let’s first take a look at osmosis. Of course, this is a term most are familiar with. After all, it is a topic we all studied in grade school science class.  To state it succinctly, osmosis is an absorption process where a weak saline solution moves towards a stronger one. Of course, the best example is in nature because the water in the soil is absorbed by plants.

Reverse osmosis is the opposite of this. Moreover, it is not a natural phenomenon and requires assistance to occur. Using pressure, water is pushed through a semipermeable membrane which literally filters out contaminants. To illustrate, picture using the back of a spoon to push a berry compote through a strainer. Which would remove the seeds. Additionally, the strainer has holes that allow some things to pass through while preventing others.  It is a type of semi-permeable membrane.

Without a doubt, the process of reverse osmosis is more complicated than this. Furthermore, it leverages specialized equipment and processes, and the semipermeable membrane’s “holes” are significantly smaller than those in a strainer. In fact, they are so small that only water vapor, not even room temperature water, can penetrate them.

Who Does Reverse Osmosis Benefit

Of course, there are a host of industries leveraging reverse osmosis in their operations today.  Those using this process include, but are not limited to:

  • Hospitality Industry (Hotels and Spas)
  • Restaurants
  • Food and Beverage Manufacturers
  • Agriculture
  • Mining
  • Power Plants
  • Off-Shore
  • Pharmaceuticals

Basically, reverse osmosis is the solution to many of the problems businesses face regarding their water, water sources, and water prices. Some of the most common applications for reverse osmosis are desalination, iron removal, arsenic removal, High TDS Reduction, ultrapure Water, Ion Exchange, deionization, hydrogen sulfide removal. Reverse osmosis systems are, for a great many businesses in Florida, across the country, and around the world an excellent investment.

Municipalities of all sizes and capacities leverage reverse osmosis water treatment systems and plants for their population water needs, there are commercial and industrial water systems available to support their needs. A common use of reverse osmosis solutions become relevant during natural disasters as reverse osmosis systems can be easily transported to support communities with lack of drinking water sources. Mobile water reverse osmosis solutions are available to provide support to communities in need, for temporary operations or communities in expansion.

At Advanced Equipment and Services, located in South Florida, we are an established organization dedicated to providing our clients with Reverse Osmosis (RO) and water purification equipment.  Our team is committed to understanding our clients’ businesses and delivering the most appropriate systems for their needs. Advantages of seawater desalination systems

Advantages of Seawater Desalination

We have a water shortage. Desalination is one of the best options we have to help provide clean and fresh water to those who need it.  You see, even though the earth is covered in water, the majority of it is located in oceans; because of the salt content it is simply not drinkable (or usable) in its natural form. Of course, we need to consider the advantages of seawater desalination systems.

Desalination is a process used to remove both salt and other materials (including minerals, and microorganisms) from water. Moreover, some of these may even be dangerous to your health.

Providing Water Around the World – Advantages of Seawater Desalination

Not to mention, the advantages of seawater desalination are considerable.  First and foremost it helps to provide water to the many around the world who don’t have access to the clean and fresh drinkable water they need to survive.  Of course, staying hydrated (many doctors believe 8 ounces of water a day is ideal) is critical to maintaining your health.

Helping the Agricultural Industry

Additionally, desalinated water can be used by those in the agricultural industry. Equally important, so much land goes unused (for planting) because there is no access to water for irrigation. Uniquely, desalinated water is perfect for this purpose. And, it can be used in times of severe weather.  Quite often, droughts can kill crops – there is simply not enough water to nourish them. Of course, desalinated water is the answer to these problems.  In short,  it provides water in cases of weather emergencies and literally transforms unusable land into a productive resource; providing jobs and additional value to individuals who need it most.

Finally, some of the most important attributes of seawater desalination systems are their impact on the environment.  First of all, they use ocean water, of which there is an unlimited supply.  They take a resource that is more than plentiful and turn it into one which is desperately needed.  Of course, providing drinkable and usable water where it is lacking, without depleting the earth’s freshwater supply, and while protecting many of the planet’s natural habitats, is incredibly valuable.

Provides Major Value

While many of us are just beginning to hear about this process and Seawater Desalination Systems, they are not new – in fact, they have been around for decades. Honestly,  many industries have been leveraging them for years.

Also, the process of desalination has undergone continuous improvement and today provides a significant value to many across the country and around the world. We need to continue to discuss the advantages of seawater desalination systems and make them a common fixture.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
CONTAINERIZED SEAWATER DESALINATION solving water for AQUACULTURE

INDUSTRIAL
AQUACULTURE
- SHRIMP FACTORY -

This project was built to deliver treated water to a Lab of Shrimp reproduction and genetic Improvement Center

Shrimp larvae laboratory

THE PROBLEM

Shortage of purified water, so well water had to be bought in tankers, and therefore increased costs in the production process. The client was looking for a way to reduce costs by optimizing their processes. The cost of water and its transfer to the plant represents a high impact in production cost.

Ultrafiltration

The solution

ARKQUA® Customer acquired two ARKQUA systems, each capable to produce 132,000 GPD (500m3d) of purified water. Each system is mounted inside a 40' container, fully automatic. Integral Clean/flush system automatically flush piping and membranes with fresh water at shutdown. This subsystem is also utilized for periodic chemical cleaning of the membranes.

Seawater Desalination Aquaculture Site

THE RESULT

Reduction of production costs by 50%, in addition the extra load driven by having to receive water distribution trucks loaded with water daily. Production time was significantly optimized, and water quality used for the development of nauplii and larvae was considerably improved. Having remote monitoring of the plant is a great benefit that allows to take proactive actions and minimized the risk of failure.
