Desalination Process - What Does It Mean?

What Does Desalination Mean?
Of course, there are things we know, things we think we know, and things that completely surprise us. The facts about water fall into each of these categories. The desalination process is something to explore.
First, let’s discuss what we know. Humans need water to survive. Of course, we need to drink clean and clear water to keep our bodies hydrated; basically, water is essential to life. We have all heard the recommendation of medical professionals to drink 8 glasses a day! When access to drinkable water is limited, illness becomes an issue, and death rates rise. Most of us are also aware that 71% of the earth is covered in water.
Now, let us turn to what we think we know. Since there is so much water on earth, many think that nobody should have issues accessing the water they need to live. It seems as if water should be plentiful for all. Unfortunately, this is untrue. In fact, much of the water on earth (over 97% to be exact) is found in the oceans – it is saltwater. Thus, it is undrinkable for humans. The desalination process can be the key to more drinkable water.
Drinkable Water – Desalination Process Can Help
This clearly indicates that a lack of drinkable water is a problem. However, there is a solution. A fact that many don’t realize. Saltwater CAN be turned into drinkable water using a process called desalination. Desalination of saltwater can help.
In desalination, the salt in water is removed making it safe to drink. This can be achieved through any one of several ways including reverse osmosis, distillation, and electrodialysis. Reverse osmosis uses pressure and a membrane system to separate the salt from the water. Distillation leverages heat to evaporate water and then contains the steam which is free from salt. Finally, electrodialysis uses electricity to separate molecules and remove the salt.
Desalination Processes – Providing Clean Water
These processes help make seawater useful and provide clean water to areas that need it desperately. Of course, as the population on earth continues to grow, so does the demand for drinkable water. Desalination can help meet this demand.
Of course, as the use of desalination grows, more and more water becomes available to those who need it most. It is an effective system that is helping to solve a problem and improve the health and well-being of people around the world.
